Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to describe demographic and air travel related characteristics of invalid passengers and to investigate flight irregularities and canceled or delayed travel cases.
Methods : All invalid passenger reports for an airline medical department during year 2005 and 2009 were examined retrospectively. A total of 427 and 732 invalid passengers traveled or intended to travel in 2005 and 2009 respectively. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze and report distributions of data collected.
Results : There were incidences of 56.92 invalid passengers per million passengers in 2005 and 85.83 in 2009. Passenger¡¯s age, flight time, and medical clearance by airlines medical department were related to flight irregularities, such as medical diversion and death on board. A total of 2 cases of flight irregularities occurred in 2005 and 10 cases in 2009.
Conclusion : The findings of this study highlighted the importance of coordination of health care professionals, airline medical department, and other related parts to ensure passengers¡¯ safe travel and to prevent flight irregularities.
